I picked up this book strictly out of curiosity to see how the famous author did in his one and only attempt at fiction. The main character and title is an eloquent proponent of democracy in his fictitious Mediterranean country (the names all sound Balkan). I expected some resonance with the career of the famed Florentine Dominican friar Savonarola, but they don’t have much in common beyond a passion for democracy. The plot covers the successful revolt of the populace when the despot refuses to concede major liberalization of the regime. Interesting that there is a confrontation with the world power of Britain in the background, and you must assume that this would have resonance with Churchill’s presumed reading audience. In general, the battle scenes are realistic and effective whereas the romance with the dictator’s wife Lucile falls pretty flat. The author obviously identifies with the handsome and brave lieutenant Tiro who keeps his head in the thick of the action. The dictator does come across as pretty savvy about statecraft, and by no means hesitant to take his chances as they come. At least the outcome is not stereotyped. The title hero achieves his revolution, his brutal general is slain, his promises to protect prisoners kept, and he limps off into the sunset to live happily ever after with his true love. A short afterward shows how all the protagonists end up coming back into politics in their country as the government continues to evolve over time, which does seem like a nicer touch than a simple happily ever after love story outcome.

Savrola A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania Winston Churchill 9781297493478 Books Reviews

Good read. Sometimes characters are hard to keep straight. Would leave me wanting to know what happens to Savrola when I had to stop reading. Loved the ending😀
Very involved plot. I never knew Winston wrote a novel but this wasn't bad at all.
State intrigue written by a student and maker of history spins a sober tail of honor intrigue and folly. Enjoy.
A very light Churchillian read barely hinting of the greatness to follow in later years. Just finished reading Anna Karenena and the star-struck lovers seem oddly familiar, as well as the unsaid details so common in present day writing are also oddly familiar...no insinuation intended. An enjoyable, short read. Churchill's forte, tho, is the biography and history as his future endeavors amply demonstrate.
This classical romantic tale tells the story of a revolution against a despotism in a fictional Mediterranean country. The author’s youth shows in places as the primary character, the eponymous Savrola, conducts long conversations with his lady love. Still, it moves briskly. I am sure that we will hear more from this promising young man in the future.
